Beylerbeyi Palace Istanbul is a stunning architectural masterpiece located on the Asian side of the Bosporus strait, just across from Istanbul’s historical peninsula. It was built by Sultan Abdulaziz in the mid-19th century and served as an imperial summer residence for Ottoman Sultans until the fall of the empire.
This impressive palace is renowned for its elegant neoclassical style, which features a mix of Ottoman and European elements. Its sprawling grounds are enclosed with marble walls that are decorated with marble bas-reliefs and inscriptions, while inside it boasts an array of grand staterooms, reception halls and pavilions arranged into distinct courtyards each with their own distinct character.
The main entrance to the palace is through a three-arched gate with intricately carved stone decoration, leading to a long tree lined path that ends at a large square courtyard with two symmetric staircases leading up to two large domed reception halls. Beyond this is another courtyard adorned with mosaics and fountains before reaching a set of lavishly ornamented chambers filled with furniture inlaid with ivory, mother-of-pearl, and gold leaf.
Further into the complex you can find outbuildings containing reception rooms, baths, harem apartments and a mosque hall surrounded by lush gardens. Although Beylerbeyi Palace Istanbul has been used for many different purposes throughout its history it remains one of Turkey’s most beloved landmarks today; visited annually by thousands of tourists looking to gain an insight into Ottoman architecture and culture.
