Gulhane Park Istanbul is a beautiful and historic park situated in the heart of the city. It is one of the oldest public parks in Turkey, founded by Sultan Mahmud II in 1829 and opened to the public as an imperial garden in 1834. Located near Topkapi Palace and surrounded by magnificently ornate Ottoman-era walls, it is a popular destination for both locals and visitors alike.
The park covers approximately 130 acres, with a huge variety of flora and fauna within its grounds. There are more than 500 species of plants and trees, some dating back to Ottoman times – including cedars, cypresses, plane trees, oaks, maples and magnolias. As well as stunning gardens there are also numerous sculptures dotted around the grounds, along with several fountains and ponds that feature carp fish.
Aside from its beautiful gardens, Gulhane Park also offers plenty to do. Visitors can explore the many monuments scattered across the park - including a grand equestrian statue of Sultan Abdülmecid I - or visit one of its many tea gardens or restaurants for refreshments. During summer months a number of events take place here too - such as theatre performances, concerts or outdoor movie screenings - allowing guests to make the most out of their visit to this special spot.
For those looking for an educational experience there's also a small museum onsite at Gulhane Park Istanbul which houses exhibits relating to Turkish history dating back centuries ago.
